Shopify Customer Privacy

Shopify can limit customer tracking by region. Consentmo integrates with the Shopify Customer Privacy API so those regions and consent signals stay aligned with your cookie banner, without a separate setup path for most stores.

What You Can Do with Consentmo + Shopify Customer Privacy

• Set automated privacy regions from Consentmo
  Choose where the cookie bar should appear and where data is collected only after consent, then save. Regions apply through the Shopify Customer Privacy API.
• Keep tracking blocked until consent
  On Shopify's side, tools such as Facebook Pixel and Google Analytics stay blocked until the customer opts in. Consentmo passes each cookie group's consent flag to Shopify as true or false.
• Cover checkout cookies too
  Blocking and consent updates also apply to cookies set on the Checkout page.
• Control Shopify session vs persistent cookies
  Cookies such as _shopify_y, _shopify_s, and _y start as session cookies. After the customer accepts the relevant groups, Shopify can upgrade them to persistent cookies.

How to set regions from Consentmo

1. Open the Consent banner tab in Consentmo.
2. Open the Regions section.
3. Choose the regions where you want the cookie bar displayed and data collected only after consent.
4. Save your changes.

Note: Automated region setup via the app applies to installations made on or after 12 December 2024.

How to set Customer Privacy regions in Shopify

You can also define regions in Shopify Admin:

1. Go to your store's Settings.
2. Open Customer Privacy.
3. Open the Cookie banner page.
4. Select More actions → Set custom banner regions.
5. Choose the regions in the modal and save.

What happens after a customer chooses

1. On page load, Shopify initially blocks tracking cookies in the selected regions.
2. The customer opts in or out of cookie groups on the banner.
3. When they accept (or save preferences), Consentmo sends a consent flag per group to Shopify (true or false).
4. Accepted groups unlock tracking; declined groups stay blocked.
5. The same consent logic applies on checkout where Shopify cookies are involved.
